BEGINNERS MIND
This piece begins with the Japanese characters for the word Shoshin from Zen Buddhism, meaning “beginners mind.”
Beginners mind refers to the idea of of having an attitude of openness and of letting go of preconceptions.
With this intention of not knowing I began work on this quilt, piecing the fabric and manipulating the calligraphy without an idea of where it would lead.
“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.” -Shunryu Suzuki
